When I learned programming, I did not rely upon the class material. I purchased programming books of the various languages. I also borrowed library books. Over a period of time, I reviewed and studied them—paying particular attention to the sample code. And more importantly, I spent countless hours doing the various tutorials, problems and exercises involved with creating program.
I learned how to do the same thing different ways, in the same language, and in different languages. This practice helped to reinforce my knowledge and proficiency. It also helped me grasp concepts and techniques that no one particular book, alone, could convey to me.
Pick an area of interest, i.e., OOP, database programming, web-based programming, XML, ASP, etc., and spend some time developing that particular skill set. Then, move on to another area.
If you google a specific programming language, along with a few keywords then, you can gain access to a treasure trove of assistance and resource material.
For example, google all of these terms together:

How can I practice my computer programming skills?
You need to find a project that stretches you. Think of a problem, think of a program to solve it, write it. The more complicated the better.
Reply:Depending on your version of windows, you can download the full ISO images of Microsofts programming utilities, like Visiual Basic,Visual C, and several others in cluded in Visual Studio Express (the vast majority of programs are written in C+). Then after you have the programs and have gone through the tutorials, oyu can attempt to write your own programs that do what you want them to.
Reply:try MSDN...
Reply:buy programs that help u program
Reply:Start creating programs on your own. Nothing beats doing examples and thinking of things and trying them out for yourself. If you need a project or something like that just think of things your always wanting to do automated and start trying to write a program for it. My programming started with basic functions because I am lazy. Now I can do even more because I now know what things do since I started just practicing.
Reply:Find something that interests you and create an open source project, or join an open source project that interests you.

Java also has a program that does silmiare stuff but i have not tried it yet.
Reply:First, you've gotta brainstorm for ideas. Then once you have an idea, make a design. And then write a program...
There's also lots of challenges and ideas on the internet:
