Honestly it depends on what your interests are and what kind of student you are. The "top" schools are those that receive the most research funding, so your instructors will very likely view teaching as an annoying distraction. You will have to be a real self starter, very disciplined, and very bright. Your instructors will not coddle you or give you second chances. They just don't have time. On the other hand, you may be able to take advantage of opportunities at such institutions that are not available elsewhere, and of course the degree will carry a lot of weight with employers or graduate schools.
For a very high quality undergraduate educational experience, you might want to look at a private 4 year college rather than a larger research institution. These schools can be very expensive but their primary mission is education, so you'll probably have a more pleasant undergraduate experience. Good 4 year institutions also carry weight with grad schools and employers.
I'll include a link below that will let you rank 108 CS graduate schools. You may be asking about an undergraduate degreee, and this data is from 1994, but it might give you some ideas. If you're an excellent student, be sure to pay attention to schools like UT-Austin, Utah, Virginia, etc., which aren't quite as famous to the layperson as MIT, but are very well respected by people in the field.

The internets a great medium for learning, fun, networking, etc... You shouldn't let a few sadistic sites out there keep your child from being able to experience these things. He/She will discover them evenutually and grow up faster than you think there's nothing you can do about that.
Please do not spy on your kids, I know you want what's best for them, but speak to a psychologist there are negative mental health effects that occur when you have no privacy as a child, you could be stunting them for life.

i double click to run a program on my pc, all programs are this way, and it shows the program in wordpad in all of that computer program garb. included programs are messengers, anti-virus, help program, etc. how do i fix the problem. my operating system is windows xp.

I ahd to upgrade my computer in the shop. I did not have the code on my computer for windows. So the lady reinstalled windows xp and in the meen time. she said my programs should be on the hard drive. I try to click on microsoft works and it wasnt there. so I got all my disks together and tried to reinstall them ten i get an error code which i found out that the code means the cd rom drive isnt working properly. i have a dvd drive as well but i try it there and the same thing comes up i can not work this computer without my programs can anyone help. please dont tell me to call the lady because i am very upset that i have to fix this so i havent paid her the money i owe. so that is why i wont contact her. What can i do with this drive what can i do to get my programs she said the programs are on the hard drive how do i find them and reinstall them? sometimes i hate computers.

In approaching potential partner organizations, you will need to show how this program will assure the safety of the children involved, how you are qualified to teach these children, a criminal background check on anyone that will be involved in this endeavor showing that no one has any convictions for violent crimes or crimes against children, what your teaching method will be, and how you will measure success of your program (how will you be able to show that it is making a difference?).

It might of been National Academy of Mobile Electronics, can't remember which one. They sold a box builder program called ProBox 5.0. It allowed you to input the specs of your speakers and the size of box which you wanted. It would show you the response curve as well as a list of each piece cut needed to construct the box. I found them through car audio magizines. They also sold how to videos on almost anything you can think of in car audio. However, I have not been able to find them on the web. Not sure if they are even in business anymore. Maybe you can have better luck searching for them. I would like to find them myself. I've lost the program somewhere along the years. Maybe someone else knows a link to them as well. Let me know if you do.

I read in some tech forums online and it seems that people refer to Computer Programming and Software Engineering as two different fields. I always thought they were the same thing. Can anyone explain the difference?
They also mentioned somewhere that Computer Programming is heavily outsourced whilst Software Engineering is "outsource-safe". Please explain that as well if you know the answer.

I will try to explain. Computer programming, back in the day, was the elite job. Then there was a huge influx in the field. What was being outsourced was basic debugging or rewriting of some code, patch work etc and technical help desk. Security was never outsourced, nor was development.
Software engineering is development. Usually on a higher scale than the smaller companies who need a small piece of software. So no they are not the same, except, programming is part of the development cycle.
If you want to go into programming, there are many fields after the first 2 years of basic programming. I don't mean 'basic' as is in the old basic either lol.
Also, most people consider HTML as programming and in our field that is not programming. It is tags for the web browser.
There are many sites on the web which can tell you the different fields and schools to concentrate on.

I love drawing and hope to be a cartoonist someday. Even though all of my hand drawn work looks better then the stuff I draw on a computer I've been wanting to improve all of my computer drawn art. I've been wanting to start writing industrial rock music. I listen to Nine Inch Nails a lot, and want to start creating some nice instrumentals. I have so many beats in my head, but a lack of knowledge of how to get my beats onto a real song. The only tool I have is the computer. Is there any tips you can give me about how I should go about writing industrial music? I would also like to know of a good program that can help me do so.

For your first question, it's difficult to answer...honestly, just write whatever comes out -- don't try to conform to creative norms. Find your own voice and roll with that.
As for what program works best, it's also difficult to answer. It's nice to have knowledge in multiple programs, as I've found it's foolish to limit yourself to one specific platform.
With that in mind, and pardon my lengthy response, you should check out Ableton Live. It's an extremely intuitive program that is FUN (key word, here). The guy who taught me Live had his mom making beats in less than a half hour -- that's how easy it is.
I'll preface my suggestion of Live with some comments on the other major platforms out there. Now, I don't mean to talk bad about these other programs...they obviously work, as people are making great music with them. But this is what I've found in working with them.
Pro Tools -- the king of audio, and the industry standard. The best program to mix in. Can be difficult to understand if you're just getting started. Sequencer is sub-standard, if you are working with MIDI.
Logic -- very powerful program, lots of virtual instruments included. EXTREMELY steep learning curve...it's a tough puppy to understand.
Digital Performer -- the best MIDI capabilities on the market. Audio is so-so, but you can make it work. A little 'blah' for my taste.
Reason -- amazing program for beats, hip-hop, etc. HUGE downside is you don't have any way to record audio (vocals, guitars, etc.) within the program.
Cubase and Sonar I haven't worked with too much, but I wasn't impressed when I used them. Sonar's interface is a friggin' mess compared to the other platforms I've used.
GarageBand -- obviously the most suggested here, and it's worth a shot if you have a Mac and don't wanna spend more money on another program. But it's the most limited compared to every other platform -- keep that in mind.
A couple suggested Sibelius, which is perfect for writing scores and the such, but for industrial rock, it won't do you any good.
So what's so good about Ableton Live?? The versatility, man. It comes with countless plug-ins already installed, you can MIDI-map them to just about any MIDI controller on the planet (I've even seen people use Guitar Hero guitars and Wii-remotes), and the Elastic Audio (the key function to Live that Pro Tools 7.4, to put it bluntly, stole) conforms every piece of audio and MIDI you're working with to a single tempo. It's also capable of being a ReWire Host or Slave, allowing other programs to simultaneously work in conjunction with it (i.e. Reason), or permitting the use of Live within another DAW, such as Pro Tools.
Basically, the way I learned it, Live is like a musical sketchpad, or canvas...and I'm not kidding when I say it practically collaborates with you in writing the music. I suggest Live to anyone who wants to write music because of this. You can experiment with the arrangement and clips (See Video: Improvising With Loops), all without even pushing 'Stop'. Creating beats is a cinch (See Video: Creating Beats). Live's interface is so unique and, again, FUN!!

It's apparently used by professional composers but what's great about it is that it's so intuitive you can just jump in and start using it without having to figure it out. It's really customizable too. I haven't tried the others apart from Finale and this was far easier than Finale.

One suite of software for serious multi-tracking is called 64Studio which will help you accomplish mixing. Again, free. 64Studio has the recording software, the drums, Rosegarden and others, all for the 64-bit machines.

What really stands out is the ability to print your own notation. This comes in real handy when applying for copyrights in the music segment portion of your work. This is almost the perfect program for doing what you want to do, and the good thing is; it comes in at an affordable cost of just under $100. Take it from someone who does this for a living. NOTATING or WRITING music? Use Finale. I got a free download of the the low-end Finale Notepad at the Finale website. It's really limited, but it's good for just plain simple notating. It does the job, I guess.

We had to do quite a few projects with it for middle school and let me tell you it was both easy and it is one of the only times we look forward for Music class.

If you are a mixologist (which is to say you aren't really writing your own music, but 'borrowing' others) then I would say, without hesitation, Ableton Live 6 is a great program. Along the same lines, for apple users, Soundtrack is a great mixing program. Also for mixing purposes, audacity is a good choice, and it's free for both major platforms.
But for someone that wants to do dedicated sequencing and composition Reaso, Logic, and Cakewalk are all equally good programs... the easiest to use among them being reason... the most full featured, cakewalk.

Reply:yeah um who cares about garage band?? and what if you dont have a mac? well i have tried out several programs and one of the best was notation composer. here is a link to their website: www.notation.com/NotationComposer.htm. seriously it is like $150 or something so yo ucan see if it is worth it buy using a 30 day trial. I found it really useful tho.

Reply:MAKING music? Use GarageBand. It's the best!
NOTATING or WRITING music? Use Finale. I got a free download of the the low-end Finale Notepad at the Finale website. It's really limited, but it's good for just plain simple notating. It does the job, I guess.

Reply:I like Sibelius for written notation. The other popular written notation program is Finale. I think Sibeius is easier to use.
Garage Band by Apple is pretty good. I use it all the time to create songs. There are lots of pre-recorded loops of all kinds and you can create your own tracks. I like the loops and I also use them for inspiration.
Another program out there is Band in a Box. I used this program briefly for a class in school. I remember it not being very hard to use.

Reply:Though you must have a MAC computer garage band is the way to go. It is fairly simple to use and many turtrials (mind spelling) are on the internet. We had to do quite a few projects with it for middle school and let me tell you it was both easy and it is one of the only times we look forward for Music class.

If you are a mixologist (which is to say you aren't really writing your own music, but 'borrowing' others) then I would say, without hesitation, Ableton Live 6 is a great program. Along the same lines, for apple users, Soundtrack is a great mixing program. Also for mixing purposes, audacity is a good choice, and it's free for both major platforms.
But for someone that wants to do dedicated sequencing and composition Reaso, Logic, and Cakewalk are all equally good programs... the easiest to use among them being reason... the most full featured, cakewalk.

However computer skills can come in handy as most hospitals use computer information systems to chart on patients. You might try looking for IT position at a health care technology company such as Phillips.

I would like to go into computer programming when I get into college, currently I am a Junior in high school.
I was wondering, what cities should I be looking for when choosing a college? I get the impression that CP depends a lot on your location in order to get a job easier. Right now I really want to go to NYU, or a college in California (although, I hear UCLA is the only good school there, is that true?).
