What's the best equipment and computer programs for an artist who does most of their work on a computer?

I love drawing and hope to be a cartoonist someday. Even though all of my hand drawn work looks better then the stuff I draw on a computer I've been wanting to improve all of my computer drawn art. At the moment I do it all with a Mouse and GIMP I plan on getting a new computer soon so I was wondering if anyone can give me advice on what equipment and computer programs I should get to help improve my art.

You definately need a drawing tablet and stylus if you are drawing into a computer program. Here's Wikipedia on tablets.

It is a must if you are drawing. I would recommend too, getting the Adobe Suite, and Macs really are great for artists. their operating systerm is a visual hierarchy, rather than PC's which function on a word hierarchy.

And if you are thinking cartoons, look into the Toon boom software. Here's their link.
