What are some good computer programs and tools for making comics?

I want a FREE program that'll aid in creating comics. I draw the pictures by hand and then scan them into my computer. What I need is something for creating speech bubbles and other text effects. Any other features would be nice, too. Thanks!

Well, a lot of that could just be done by copying and pasting in Paint or another free simple picture editor. But if you want somebody to make something entirely new and high-quality for this purpose, you should expect to pay for it.
Reply:i used ulead photoimpact on my manga

this is how it turned out http://fallenangel2.blog.com/

but try photoshop its much more known out there
Reply:try Flash from macromedia.com, you can download de freeware and get the crack in Kazaa. Here you can scan your comics in JPEG and modify them or add anything you want, Plus it is easy to use
Reply:Photoshop and Illustrator. There really is no "best" program to use, because the majority of the work, and how the comic ends up, is dependant on the creator, not the programs.

Photoshop is good for drawing and sketching, sometimes coloring...Illustrator is good for text, aligning the panels, and gradient and flat coloring...Photoshop is better suited for the "soft" type of coloring.

Those programs are pretty expensive, though. There's a program very similar to Photoshop, though...and it's free. It's called "Gimp". Look it up on google, and you should find it.
Reply:i totally agree, adobe illustrator and photoshop are great,

for other effects try corel painter too

they are not soooo easy to learn on your own, if you practice they become really simple to use but its better if you use tutorials from the internet

they are not free but maybe one of your friends has one
