Reply:alt+control+delete once and look at the list.

You can take a look at the processes tab and see what all exactly is running and how much random access memory it's using. Be careful if ending any of these programs from running though, a lot of them are crucial to keep your computer working correctly.
Reply:Windows XP is not slow. If you have a smaller chip it could make it run slow, as could not enough RAM.

Shut down all of your programs and press control + Alt + Delete at the same time to bring up the task manager.

If there is no program running then you just need to do basic housekeeping.

-First, uninstall any programs you don't want, and delete any files you no longer need. Empty the recycle bin.

-Then defragment your hard drive, by going to start - all programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter.

Don't use your pc at all while it is defragmenting. Just leave it to run. It should only take 20 minutes; if it takes hours you don't do it often enough.

- Run a complete malware scan; anti virus, anti trojan, anti adware and anti spyware.

- Consider upgrading your RAM. If you have less than 256 mb double it.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.
