What kind of job can I get with a Computer Programming degree?

The degree gets you nothing, you have to gain experience and knowledge and leadership in a field or technology before you get the job.

The degree does show that you went to a college and know how to do things like learn, take tests, take direction, and be responsible. It also shows that you've learned or at least been introduced to the basic concepts and technologies within the scope of your degree.

If "computer programming" is the title I will assume it's an associates degree, as the bachelors degrees will generally be "computer science" or "software engineering" or something similar (and no those are not the same thing). An associates degree in computer programming coupled with something that looks like experience (winning contests, being active in the community, taking some independent contracting jobs, getting a 3.5+ gpa, etc) will help you get a job title something like software programmer, software analyst, programmer analyst, staff programmer, computer programmer, webmaster, web maintainer, or C++/Java/.NET/[insert technology] programmer.

With a bachelors degree in a similar field (plus the experience stuff) you'll find it easier to get those "analyst" jobs or similar named ones such as: software developer, product developer, software engineer, software designer, QA engineer, quality engineer, etc. If the degree is actually computer science, then you can also have an easier time going into job titles like IT technician, support technician, information engineer, network engineer, network administrator, or one of a thousand other variants.

Note that the job title doesn't always reflect the actual work being done -- that varies by company.

The main caveat is experience or something that looks like it (it's a Catch22, I know). The secondary caveat is that you have to learn at least one technology very well, whether it's .NET, Java, C/C++, ASP/PHP/JSP/etc., dHTML, Ruby, or any other of a thousand technologies in use today.

I'd suggest trying to learn the process of software development as well, as that is much more valuable than any one particular technology.

Reply:While it depends partly on the degree title as a degree in Computer Programming is somewhat different than a degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering. An newly graduated person with a Bachelors degree in Computer Programming can typically expect to be able to look for a job that is in anyway related to the software development process, this includes testing, developing designs, and programming.

Typically most people with a degree in Computer Programming start out in an entry level computer programming position and work up from there. In this case do not let the term "entry level" throw you off - an entry level computer programmer at a major company can expect to spend most of the time at work writing code and making a decent salary - usually starting at about $45,000 depending upon where you live.
Reply:Computer Programmer, Software Developer. But you have to be a professional in some technology. For example, .NET , Java
