What is Computer Programming?

I'm 16 and I'm taking a class in computer programming starting in the fall. What exactly is it? Is it fun?

What is Computer Programming?
Computer programming is the process of identifying a routine and automating it by developing software that will do the task for you. In my 17 years experience as a software engineer, here is the invariant life cycle of computer programming:

#1 - Someone has a bright idea.

#2 - Person finds an investor (usually a company) that will fund his bright idea.

#3 - Person hires managers, artists, software engineers and testers to implement the idea.

#4 - Software takes longer to develop than originally hoped because:

A - Management adds and changes requirements every day.

B - Even programmers have to sleep 2-3 hours daily

C - Testers won't allow code to slip out to the marketplace because coders turn out crap after weeks of sleep deprivation.

D - Debugging

E - Goto C

Sometime between steps C and E, management slips away to another company before losing their jobs AND management fires programmers for not working enough hours AND management decides to go forward with another idea as a diversion from their prior failures.

Sometimes the software is developed and ready for prime-time after millions are spent on development. Then, a marketing analysis determines that there would not be enough market for the software, so it is better to not be released at all. Then, the project is canned and the past two years of a programmers life suddenly have no meaning and it is as if he never existed.

Not that I'm bitter or any of this ever happened to me.
Reply:Hi dancer,

Computer Programming is writing programs (like windows) for computers. Also write programs for programs.

Say that you wanted a inventory program for your private or business, you would find a programmer (to make a long story short) you would tell the programmer what you wanted, layout options in the program, colors, actions, results, files, etc.. then the programmer would start writing the code for the program, then they would show you what it looks like so far, and if that's what you want, then the programmer would finish up the program, you choose the name and everything else that you want in the program.

Now this is NOTHING like Windows, but it can be, if there is enough programmers get together and make one happy Operating System, or Application for and OS.

WOW, enuff already LOL
Reply:it can be fun, depending on what you think is fun to do.

computer programming is, in essence, writing a set of instructions for the computer to follow so that it can accomplish a specific task.

a computer program is a set of instructions. writing these instructions is computer programming. in a nutshell.

if you're the indoor type, who wouldn't mind sitting down in front of your computer alone for hours trying to figure out how to make something work, then try computer programming... but if you get bored easily, or you're an active type of guy, then it might not be as fun as playing baseball or hanging out.
Reply:programing code for computer systems, i.e. software, firmware, OS

you will most likely use C++ if you are just starting out.

it can be fun but it can also be very frustrating as well.
