How do I disable a program so that it doesnt start up when i start my computer?

when i start my computer, programs like yahoo messenger, aol messenger and who knows what else start up and then seem to either crash or whatever else, and are generally a pain.

i dont use them even regularly, and they are a big headache. ive tried to find in the system tray how to disable them from starting up automatically, but no luck. and the help secion in my HP computer seems to be of little help. anyone have an idea how to do this? i did find the quicklaunch tray and removed the programs, but im not sure if that will do the job.

How do I disable a program so that it doesnt start up when i start my computer?
click start-run.

type msconfig

click on startup

there u will find all the programs that start with your computer

disable the ones u dont want to start up but

make sure u dont disable important programs such as antivirus or firewall!!!
Reply:There's a program called Windows Startup Inspector. It works very well.
Reply:I am using this one and I hope this will help you with startup problem, try it :- http://www.regcure.biz.ly
Reply:If they're not in your startup folder, you'll have to dig them out of the registry. I've found 'Hijack this!' a useful tool for the purpose. Just be sure only to remove items you understand and object to.
Reply:well i know on the AIM buddy list under My AIM then preferences, there's an option to not have it start automatically...i don't use Yahoo Instant Messenger enough to know but I would guess if you can find a Preference menu, the option for that is there, too.

Hope that helps.
Reply:hit START go to RUN and type MSCONFIG. A box will come up with tabs on top. The tab on the right has programs that will run on start-up. Just uncheck the ones you dont want. Good Luck!
Reply:Start-%26gt; Run

Type msconfig

Click on Startup tab

Uncheck whatever you want disabled
Reply:You can also use MSconfig to disable the unwanted stuff.

go start, then run, type msconfig, then click ok. go under startup tab, a checkmark in the box indicates that it will launch when windows starts up. uncheck the box(es) of what you want disabled then save it and restart the computer.
Reply:Take them out of your startup menu. Check also the options on the programs...usually you can select in options if it starts on startup or not.
Reply:REPROGRAM,do it all over
Reply:You may have to edit the startup options in your registry. Not recommended if you haven't done it before...
Reply:one way is to use msconfig

start---run-----msconfig

select the start up tab

then just deselect programs you do not want to start with windows

(might require a restart after you save changes)

An easier and more informative way is to download and use windows startup inspector http://www.windowsstartup.com/
